Rotary Club of Malden

Minutes of September 1, 2010 Meeting

President Mark Golub presided and convened the meeting at 12:45.

Visiting Rotarians: None

Guests: Mark Lawhorne, was a guest of Bill Burns.

President Mark recognized our guest and informed us that Mark Lawhorne is “in process” to become a member.

President Mark asked for reports from Committees and Joanne Cohn responded with a report about the Ghana water project.  The proposal is asking for approximately $40K for water filters and she has reached out to other clubs for cooperation and is awaiting word.

President Mark next recognized Terry Giove for a report of the Membership Committee.  Terry then proceeded to prepare everyone to produce a list of names for potential new membership.  Terry will be supplying a form provided by your humble Secretary and all members are asked to provide as many “leads” as they can.

Mark then talked about an upcoming Foundation Committee meeting, which will be held on September 30th.. at the Crowne Plaza (formerly the Sheraton Ferncroft) in Danvers.  All members of the Foundation Committee should make every effort to attend this important meeting.

Happy and Sad dollars were collected by our Auxiliary Sergeant-At-Arms, Carl Rowe.  This week’s winner of the “Happy or Sad Dollar of the Week,” is Janice Taylor.  Janice remained calm during the heat of a robbery at her bank…fortunately nobody was harmed and we are Happy to have Janice with us safe and sound.

We then heard two wonderful Classification speeches from Ron Pressman and Brian Cox.

Ron, who is a Past president of Malden Rotary, let us know a little bit about himself, his antique car and antique boat, and then about his law practice, which focuses primarily on bankruptcy proceedings.  It was an interesting and insightful talk…thank you Ron.

Brian then proceeded to deliver a shock and awe speech that was filled with tales from a YMCA camping trip circa 1975 in which a group of troubled teens ran amok in New Hampshire.  Who knew that the peaceful and mild mannered Brian could be such an enforcer…what a story.

Announcements: The club will pay for anyone that wishes to attend the upcoming Rotary meeting, which will be held in Danvers on .

Carl Rowe won the raffle.

The meeting adjourned at 1:30.

Respectfully Submitted,

David D’Arcangelo

Secretary

NOTE:  Please note that your humble Secretary will be absent next week.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Hello, fellow and sister Malden Rotarians:

I recently met with Ron Cox, our publicity co-chair, about reviving our Malden Rotary cable program, and we have agreed at this time on doing one program a month with repeats going forward. We might increase that to two programs a month down the road. We are in the midst of planning our September program now--look for it on MATV after the middle of the month. Thank you, Ron!!

There will be a meeting of the Foundation Committee at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 15th, followed by our first Board and committee chairpersons meeting of the year at 11:30 am. Board members, kindly inform me of your plans to attend. We need a good turn-out because we have much to discuss.

Mark Lawhorne, president of Lawhorne Communications, has attended his third luncheon and is now eligible to apply for membership to our club. Rick Burns is his sponsor. We look forward to Mark's affiliation with us and trust that he will derive much from it, just as his wonderful father-in-law, Charlie Kelley, did for so many decades before his passing last year.

There will be five of us attending the District 7930 Foundation/Membership Forum on Thursday, September 30th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Danvers: Julia Phelps, District 7930 Foundation chair; David Hart, our Foundation Committee chair; Terry Giove and Janice Taylor, Membership Committee co-chairs, and yours truly. We hope to bring back to our club the latest information on these vital areas of Rotary life.

I want to wish all our Jewish members "L'Shanah Tovah"--a happy New Year--as the High Holydays begin on the evening of Wednesday, September 8th.

I look forward to seeing all of you this coming Wednesday. Don't forget to wear your name tag, or else you'll be fined $2.00!!

Yours, in Rotary service,

Mark
